In Dupchanchia Upazila of Bogura, a worker named Aminul Islam (30) was killed when the roof of an under-construction cold storage collapsed. Two other workers were injured in the incident.
The accident occurred on Sunday (1 January) around 7:00 PM in the Khonihara area of Chamrul Union. Fire Service and Civil Defense teams immediately started a rescue operation after receiving the news. After nearly three hours of effort, the body of the deceased worker was recovered from under the rubble at around 10:00 PM.
The deceased, Aminul Islam, was the son of Azizul Islam from Bairia village, Taraganj Upazila, Rangpur district. He was employed as a worker in the roof casting work of the cold storage.
According to Fire Service and local sources, the cold storage was being constructed under the ownership of Kamrun Nahar from Ashulia, Dhaka, named "Mac Fair Cold Storage." While the casting was underway, the roof suddenly collapsed. Some workers present at the scene managed to escape quickly, but Aminul Islam could not get out and was trapped under the debris.
The two injured workers are Shahajul Islam (35) from South Pakuria village, Kalai Upazila, Joypurhat, and Belal Hossain (25). They received preliminary treatment at the local Upazila Health Complex.
Shariful Islam, Assistant Director of Bogura Fire Service and Civil Defense, said that the preliminary assumption is that negligence during the construction work caused the accident. Since the incident, none of the cold storage authorities have been found at the site.
OC Afzal Hossain of Dupchanchia Police Station said that the body will be handed over once the deceased’s family members arrive. Legal action will be taken against those responsible if a complaint is filed.
