The era of openly expressing one’s emotions in music has returned. Artists like Fiona Apple and Alanis Morissette perfected this approach, and now the new generation of musicians is following in their footsteps.

This fall, Taylor Swift became the first to reveal her personal life to the world in her song “WD”. Now, Lily Allen has followed suit with her long-awaited fifth studio album, “West End Girl”, released after seven years. Many see this album as a reflection of Allen’s rushed and controversial separation from her ex-husband, Stranger Things actor David Harbour.

In the album’s seventh track, “Pussy Palace”, Allen is candid in her usual fearless style. While Harbour’s name is not directly mentioned, the song narrates a specific period when Allen and her partner argued. She brings personal items from her ex-partner’s apartment, as she refuses to place them in her own bed.

Upon arriving at the apartment, Allen senses “something is off” and realizes that what she previously believed was her partner’s “dojo” is something else entirely. She questions in the song, “Am I looking at a sex addict?”, and vividly describes a second verse featuring “handwritten letters in the showbox,” written by brokenhearted women who felt their partners could have been better.

Throughout the song, she depicts scenes such as torn bedsheets, long black hair, and obscure personal items in a Dwayne Reed bag—perfect examples of her candid artistry.

Through “West End Girl”, Allen reaffirms that in music, the term ‘overly candid’ carries no boundaries.

In simple terms, this album can be seen as a modern take on Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know” from three decades ago. It reflects not just heartbreak, but the process of finding resilience and self-healing through art.

For example, in the track “Tennis”, Allen expresses frustration over hidden messages on her partner’s phone: “So you showed me a picture on Instagram / how you took the phone back.”

Relationships are never easy, but for artists like Allen and Swift, the most natural approach seems to be expressing every emotion, exposing every tiny detail to their audience, and confronting their surprise and sensitive reactions.
