Following their series loss against Afghanistan, confusion has arisen over Bangladesh’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup. With one match remaining and the series already lost, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) issued an official statement saying that there are still 24 matches left to secure a spot among the top nine in the rankings, and there is sufficient time to achieve this. However, these remaining matches also pose a significant challenge for Bangladesh.

The BCB noted that these 24 matches are crucial to maintain a top-nine ranking by March 31, 2027. Experts warn that if Bangladesh fails in these matches as well, their ranking could drop further, jeopardizing direct qualification for the World Cup. After losing a consecutive third ODI series against Afghanistan, concerns over Bangladesh’s performance have grown.

The third match against Afghanistan was essentially a “honor-defending” game for Bangladesh, where they faced the risk of a heavy defeat. Chasing a modest target of 191 runs in the second match, Bangladesh was all out for just 109, marking their lowest total against Afghanistan. The batting failure has put the team in trouble, especially with spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed commenting, “Bangladesh played according to the bowler’s name, looking at players like Rashid Khan,” which has further raised concerns.

For Bangladesh to keep their World Cup hopes alive, the upcoming match is extremely important. Rishad Hossain said, “After the second match, we all know we made mistakes. But now the whole team is giving 110%. We want to win the final match and return home on a positive note.”

If Bangladesh fails to overcome their batting struggles against Afghanistan in this match, they may face a difficult situation. Upon returning home, they are scheduled to play an ODI series against the West Indies next month, which will be a major challenge for the team.

For the Bangladesh cricket team, today’s match is not only about avoiding a series loss but is also crucial for maintaining team confidence and their ranking.
