One of the world’s top tennis stars and winner of 24 Grand Slam titles, Novak Djokovic, is preparing to start a new life in Greece with his family. He has already enrolled his children in a private Greek school.
Long known as a national hero in Serbia, Djokovic has recently come under intense criticism in his home country for expressing solidarity with protesting students. Close media allies of President Aleksandar Vučić have labeled Djokovic a “fake patriot” and accused him of supporting a so-called “color revolution.”
The protests followed a tragic incident last December in Novi Sad, where 16 people died when a railway station roof collapsed. Angered students took to the streets demanding an end to corruption and political change. At the time, Djokovic wrote on social media: “I believe in the power and dreams of young people. It is crucial to hear their voices. Serbia’s greatest strength is its educated youth.”
Djokovic did not limit his support to online posts. He dedicated a victory at the Australian Open to an injured student, participated in a basketball match in Belgrade wearing a shirt that read “Students are Champions,” and even shared images of the protests on social media.
Facing growing pressure and criticism, and considering the safety and future of his family, Djokovic has reportedly decided to reside in Greece.
