Hollywood action king Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is showing audiences a different side of himself this time. The 53-year-old star appears in The Smashing Machine, a film based on the life of mixed martial arts star Mark Kerr. At the premiere during the Venice Film Festival last Sunday, the audience gave Johnson and co-star Emily Blunt a 15-minute standing ovation for their performances.
Johnson said, “I’ve long been interested in playing unconventional roles, but I was also afraid—could I truly dive into the character? When the opportunity came, I pushed myself completely.” The film not only showcases fights but also tells Kerr’s story of drug addiction, complex relationships, and personal struggles. Emily Blunt added, “Seeing Johnson completely lose himself in the character was truly thrilling.”
After its release, media outlets praised Johnson’s performance. Variety described it as “incredible; it feels like discovering a whole new actor.” The Telegraph rated the film 4 out of 5, noting, “The entire movie stands on the foundation of authentic acting.”
Johnson stated that he took this role to fulfill his own dream, not to prove anything to anyone. “For a long time, I wondered: Am I living my dream, or someone else’s?” he said, adding that this project was his answer.
This performance has put Johnson in contention for best actor awards. Next year, he could be nominated for the Golden Globes, Oscars, and other major awards.
Known as a wrestler in the 1990s, ‘The Rock’ Johnson retired from wrestling in 2004 and focused on films. He has achieved commercial success with Jumanji, San Andreas, Black Adam, and the Fast & Furious franchise. At the Venice Festival, audiences saw a different Johnson—portraying a new character with fresh expressions and complex depth.
