Sanju Barai, a student of Dhaka University's Jagannath Hall, died by suicide today, Monday (July 14), by jumping from the roof of the hall's newly constructed Rabindra Bhaban. The incident occurred around 5:30 AM.

The hall's Provost, Debashish Pal, confirmed the matter to The Daily Campus. Sanju Barai was a 2020-21 session student in the university's Department of Anthropology.

The Provost stated that a cleaner discovered Sanju jumping around 5:36 AM while on duty. The cleaner then alerted the security guard, who promptly rushed Sanju to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Initially, his identity couldn't be ascertained. Later, police from Shahbagh Police Station found a question paper from the Anthropology Department in his pocket. His identity was then confirmed by contacting students from his department.

When asked about the reason for the suicide, the Provost mentioned that, according to Sanju's classmates, he had been struggling with mental distress for some time due to issues with a romantic relationship. His friends also revealed that he hadn't been staying at the hall for the past two days, residing instead at a childhood friend's house. He returned to the hall this morning and then tragically took his own life.
