Denmark is facing a “decisive moment” regarding Greenland’s future, according to Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, following US President Donald Trump’s renewed threats of force to seize the Arctic territory, creating fresh concern across Europe.

Ahead of discussions on global raw materials and strategic resources in Washington, D.C., Frederiksen said in a discussion with Danish political leaders that the Greenland crisis has clearly created a conflict. She emphasized that the issue involves not only Greenland but also international law and the right to self-determination.

In a Facebook post, the Danish Prime Minister stated that Denmark is prepared to defend its values, potentially including the Arctic region. She emphasized that Denmark supports international law and the people’s right to self-determination.

Following Trump’s recent statements, Germany and Sweden expressed support for Denmark. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson condemned the US’s “threatening language,” stating that an attempt to seize Greenland would violate international law and could encourage other countries to act similarly. At a defense conference, he noted that Nordic, Baltic, and several European countries stand united with Denmark.

Germany also reaffirmed support for Denmark regarding Greenland. Before a meeting with the US Secretary of State, German Foreign Minister Johan Vadeful discussed strategic Arctic challenges in Iceland.

According to a leading UK media outlet, European military leaders are beginning preliminary discussions on potential NATO missions to secure Greenland, including deploying troops, naval assets, and aircraft. Belgium’s Defense Minister Theo Franken also supports NATO action in the Arctic, arguing that showing united strength is necessary to address security concerns.

Trump claims that Russia and China’s military activities in the Arctic make control of Greenland vital for US national security. Once a Danish colony, Greenland is now autonomous and is considering loosening its relationship with Denmark in the future. Surveys indicate that Greenland’s population opposes US dominance. Analysts suggest that this tension is now not only a regional issue but a significant global political matter.
