Delay in Bangladesh national football team coach appointment; Micale and Coleman in discussion

The appointment process for the new head coach of the Bangladesh national football team has not yet been finalized. Although a shortlist of potential coaches has been prepared, discussions regarding salary structure, coaching staff, and financial capacity have delayed a final decision by the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF).

According to BFF sources, initially a shortlist of foreign coaches was made, but it was later expanded. Currently, 11 coaches are being evaluated by relevant officials.

Among them, Brazilian coach Rogério Micale is the most discussed candidate. He has demanded a monthly salary of 35,000 US dollars, which is approximately 4.3 million Bangladeshi Taka. Kamrul Islam Hilton, chairman of the BFF technical committee, said that negotiations may reduce the amount.

Rogério Micale is a well-known figure in international football. Under his coaching, Brazil’s U-23 team won the Olympic gold medal in Rio, where Neymar was the captain. Due to his experience and success, BFF is reportedly very interested in him.

However, the high salary demand has created financial pressure for BFF. For this reason, assistance has been sought from the Ministry of Youth and Sports. State Minister for Sports Aminul Haque has assured policy-level support but has asked BFF to clarify its financial position first.

Another candidate in the list is former Wales international footballer and coach Chris Coleman. He has demanded around 30,000 US dollars per month. He has coached clubs such as Fulham, Sunderland, and teams in Greece. As a player, he represented Manchester City and Crystal Palace.

BFF officials said not only the head coach but also his assistant coaches and entire coaching staff structure are being considered. The candidates have also asked for details regarding who will work with them.

Although it was earlier said that the coach would be announced within three days, no final decision has been made yet. The technical committee chairman Hilton said more time is needed for interviews and evaluations.

The BFF president will make the final decision. Meanwhile, virtual meetings and discussions with potential coaches are ongoing.
