In Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, the curfew has been extended as of Monday, with additional security forces deployed across the city. This move comes after violent clashes between law enforcement and Gen Z protesters during demonstrations the previous day, which resulted in at least 14 fatalities.
Chief District Officer of Kathmandu, Shubilal Rizal, stated that the curfew would be in effect from 12:30 PM to 10:00 PM. Initially, the curfew covered parts of the Baneshwor area, but it was later expanded to include key locations such as the President’s official residence Shital Niwas, the Vice President’s residence in Lionchour, Singha Durbar, the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, and surrounding important areas.
During the curfew, all movement, gatherings, protests, and sit-ins are strictly prohibited. Citizens have been urged to remain indoors and comply with the curfew. Authorities emphasized that the measure was necessary to secure important government buildings and prevent further unrest.
Since midnight last Thursday, the government has blocked 26 social media platforms and apps, including Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. According to Nepalese law, these platforms were required to register with the authorities, but they failed to do so within the specified time. Platforms like TikTok, ViVaR, and three others that completed registration are currently active.
During Monday’s protests, Gen Z activists and young people were at the forefront. They attempted to break through police barricades. In response, law enforcement used water cannons and tear gas shells, while protesters retaliated by throwing tree branches and bottles. Some demonstrators managed to enter the Parliament building, during which police gunfire caused casualties.
Protesters demanded that the government address corruption in addition to reopening social media platforms.
Local sources report that at least 14 people were killed during the clashes, with several others injured. Among the injured, at least 10 are in critical condition. Security forces remain deployed in various areas to maintain control and prevent further violence.
