Messi’s side will kick off their Club World Cup campaign at 6:00 AM (Bangladesh time) on Sunday, taking on Egyptian giants Al Ahly in their opening match. The game marks the beginning of a fresh challenge for the superstar forward.
This year’s tournament is historic in itself—the first Club World Cup to feature 32 teams, modeled after the format of the FIFA World Cup, including group stages, knockout rounds, quarterfinals, semifinals, and a final. The expanded competition has already stirred excitement among football fans worldwide.
Messi is no exception. Sharing his thoughts after final preparations, he said:
"This tournament has always been special. I’ve played it before, but this time it feels completely different—a new team, a new stage. It’s a fresh challenge for me."
The Argentine has already won the Club World Cup three times with FC Barcelona (in 2009, 2011, and 2015), where he was the central figure of a legendary squad. But this time, he's leading a much younger, less experienced Inter Miami team, and will need to guide them using both his skill and leadership.
Inter Miami coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino commented:
“Having Messi isn’t just an advantage on the pitch—it’s a source of inspiration in the dressing room as well. He knows how to lead by example.”
At 37, Messi shows no signs of complacency. His dedication in training and confidence before the opener reflect his hunger.
"I want to win this trophy. It would be the first major international title in Inter Miami’s history, and I would be proud to contribute to that," he stated.
Analysts say that if Messi manages to win this tournament, he will further cement his legacy—not just as a Club World Cup icon, but as one of the most successful footballers in club and international history. His relentless pursuit of silverware, even after changing continents, clubs, and leagues, stands as one of the most extraordinary narratives in modern football.
