AI is no longer limited to chatbots that simply answer questions. The use of AI agents capable of visiting websites on behalf of users, searching for information, filling out forms and completing various online tasks is growing rapidly. In response to this shift, internet infrastructure company Cloudflare has unveiled a cloud-based web browser called ‘Kitesurf,’ specifically designed for AI agents.

However, Kitesurf was not developed as an alternative to Chrome for ordinary users like conventional browsers. Its primary purpose is to give AI agents the ability to browse the web. Using Cloudflare's browser, AI software will be able to navigate websites, collect information, fill out forms and perform various browser-based tasks.

In conventional browsers designed for humans, features such as tabs, themes, extensions and the visual experience of web pages are important. However, Cloudflare believes these features are not necessary for AI agents.

A browser designed for AI instead needs to place greater emphasis on context windows, processing performance, token usage costs and the ability to perform tasks simultaneously at large scale. Its security risks are also different. In particular, malicious instructions embedded in websites or attacks such as prompt injection can influence AI agents.

Cloudflare said Kitesurf was designed with these issues in mind.

Cloudflare said the initial version of Kitesurf was developed within just 12 weeks of starting the project. The browser operates entirely on the company's serverless platform, Workers.

The company is currently offering free access to Kitesurf in beta. It can be used through the Browser Run platform, where developers can control headless browsers running on Cloudflare's network through programming.

One of Kitesurf's key advantages for developers is efficient use of computing resources. Cloudflare claims that for common agent-based tasks, such as taking screenshots of web pages or collecting HTML, Kitesurf uses less CPU and memory than Chromium. As a result, it could potentially reduce the cost of operating AI agents.

Kitesurf is not built entirely using Cloudflare's proprietary technology. Several open-source technologies have been used to develop different components of the browser.

One module of its rendering engine comes from Blitz. Firefox's Stylo is used for CSS parsing, while the Rust-based Boa ECMAScript engine is used to run JavaScript. The rest of the browser's infrastructure operates on Cloudflare's Workers platform.

Cloudflare also said that the open-source, Rust-based headless browser engine Obscura inspired the concept behind Kitesurf. The company even worked on porting Obscura to the Workers platform as an initial proof of concept.

Although it is new, Cloudflare claims significant progress has already been made in evaluating Kitesurf's capabilities. According to the company, the browser has already passed more than 215,000 web platform tests. New tests are being added every week.

Kitesurf can correctly display various websites and web applications, including the popular web application TodoMVC, Wikipedia, Hacker News and Cloudflare's own blog. The company also said that a large portion of the Cloudflare dashboard can be rendered properly in the browser.

As the use of AI agents continues to grow, so does the need to make web browsing more efficient and secure for them. Until now, developers often had to build their own browser infrastructure for such tasks. Kitesurf is intended to reduce that need by providing a browsing infrastructure specifically designed for AI agents.

As a result, Cloudflare is seeking to establish a position in the future market of AI-powered web usage without directly competing in the conventional browser market for ordinary users. How broadly this initiative expands will depend largely on the results of Kitesurf's beta testing and the effectiveness of its security capabilities.
