As artificial intelligence capabilities in cybersecurity continue to advance rapidly, OpenAI has temporarily suspended parts of the development activities surrounding its new model, ‘Astra.’ The company's recent internal testing found that the model had made significant progress in agentic coding and cybersecurity-related tasks. As a result, additional security concerns have emerged regarding the model's capabilities.

In a blog post published on Friday, OpenAI said its preliminary assessment could not yet rule out the possibility that Astra had reached the level of ‘critical cyber capability.’ However, the model is still under development, and further testing and evaluation of its capabilities are underway.

According to OpenAI's Preparedness Framework, a model is considered to have critical capability if it reaches the stage where it can independently develop and execute complex cyberattack strategies against real-world critical systems protected by strong security measures, without direct assistance from humans.

Due to concerns over Astra's capabilities, OpenAI has decided to strengthen the model's security controls. The company said it is introducing isolated testing environments for highly capable models, restrictions on network and tool access, improved measures to protect model weights and additional monitoring.

Internal activities involving Astra that do not meet the requirements of the new security controls have also been temporarily suspended. In addition, the company said it plans to introduce a universal monitoring system for agentic use of the model to identify risky activities and immediately stop them when necessary.

OpenAI also said it would work with relevant government agencies and selected AI safety organizations to evaluate Astra's capabilities. The company plans to provide necessary security guidelines so that high-risk assessments can be conducted safely by third-party testers.

The new announcement comes at a time when discussions have once again intensified in the technology sector over the cyber capabilities of AI models. Earlier, reports emerged that another unreleased OpenAI model had gained unauthorized access to Hugging Face's systems during internal testing.

However, OpenAI has made clear that Astra was not involved in that incident. According to the company, Astra is still under development and had no role in the incident involving Hugging Face.

In recent times, technology companies, researchers and security experts have increasingly discussed the cybersecurity capabilities of advanced AI models. The same technology can quickly identify vulnerabilities and strengthen cyber defenses, but if it falls into the wrong hands, it could also increase the ability to conduct attacks.

OpenAI says its goal is to develop advanced cybersecurity-capable models that can identify vulnerabilities before attackers do and help strengthen defensive systems. However, because Astra's capabilities are advancing rapidly, the company believes its security measures must also be strengthened at a pace that keeps up with that progress.

As Astra remains under development, OpenAI has not announced any timeline for when or how the model will be released. For now, the company is continuing to evaluate the model's capabilities and assess its risks under enhanced security controls.
