PNN Report | Dhaka, July 7, 2025: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Monday stressed the importance of presenting the true, unbiased history of Bangladesh’s Liberation War through the activities of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.
He made these remarks during a meeting held in the afternoon at the State Guest House Jamuna. The meeting was attended by Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk E Azam, Principal Secretary to the Chief Adviser Siraj Uddin Mia, and other officials of the ministry.
During the meeting, Adviser Faruk E Azam criticized the previous activities of the ministry, stating that crores of takas were spent on constructing various structures and infrastructures that present a distorted version of the Liberation War's history. He noted that many of these structures lack detailed accounts of battlefields or the stories of real freedom fighters. Instead, exaggerated narratives centered around a single family were presented using selective photos and personal belongings.
As an example, the adviser mentioned a research project titled “Implementing the Ideals of Bangabandhu and the Spirit of Liberation War”, which had a proposed budget of BDT 230 million (23 crore taka). He claimed that despite receiving such funds, no significant research was conducted.
He further stated, “Sheikh Hasina turned freedom fighters into a privileged class. She politicized the allocation of property, financial aid, and facilities meant for them. The infrastructures built for freedom fighters were used as venues for Awami League’s political activities.”
Referring to abandoned and valuable properties under the Freedom Fighters’ Welfare Trust, the adviser emphasized the need to make timely decisions regarding their proper use.
In response, the Chief Adviser instructed the immediate appointment of a consultant and formation of a follow-up committee to assess how these assets can be utilized effectively and how the Trust's institutional capacity can be strengthened.
“The Trust must be revitalized. We need clear actions on what its functions should be and what kinds of enterprises can be established on its properties,” the Chief Adviser said.
He also advised all concerned to ensure that every future project of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs reflects the true history of the Liberation War.
During the meeting, the ministry presented to the Chief Adviser an overview of its major initiatives under the current government and outlined its work plan for the next six months.
