While the British government has temporarily halted some arms sales to Israel, a new investigation has revealed shocking information. Europe's largest missile manufacturer, MBDA, whose U.S. branch produces critical components for GBU-39 bombs, has been sending these bombs to Israel in thousands. These bombs have been used in airstrikes in Gaza where countless civilians, including Palestinian children, have been killed.
MBDA's Alabama factory manufactures the 'wings' used in GBU-39 bombs. These Boeing-built bombs use these wings to strike targets after launch. Revenue from MBDA's U.S. branch flows through the UK to the MBDA Group headquarters in France. Last year, MBDA distributed £350 million in dividends to its shareholders, including Britain's largest defense company, BAE Systems.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy had suspended some arms export licenses to Israel last September, citing the risk of "serious violations of international humanitarian law." However, the scope of this ban is limited, as it only applies to military equipment exported directly from Britain. As a result, MBDA's U.S. branch can continue supplying Boeing from its Alabama factory, which falls outside this restriction.
The investigation verified 24 incidents where GBU-39 bombs were used, resulting in the deaths of civilians, particularly children. Many of these attacks occurred at night, without warning, in schools and tent camps where displaced families had sought refuge. Human rights activists have identified these incidents as war crimes.
MBDA has acknowledged its contract with Boeing for wing production and stated that it complies with all relevant national and international laws. However, this incident has highlighted the limitations of the British government's arms export policies. Critics argue that the UK must take stronger action to stop the genocide in Israel, including sanctions on companies supplying arms to Israel and prohibiting UK investment in such entities.
