Bollywood comedian Rajpal Yadav has returned to jail after failing to repay a loan taken for film production. A court ordered him to serve six months. He surrendered at Delhi’s Tihar Jail on Tuesday afternoon.

Court sources revealed that in 2010, Yadav took a loan of around INR 5 crore from a production company for his directorial debut film Ata Pata Lapata. The film was not commercially successful, leading to repayment complications. Several bounced checks were filed as cases under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

After a lengthy legal process, a magistrate court in 2018 convicted Yadav and his wife, sentencing him to six months in prison. The verdict was upheld by higher courts. Yadav remained on bail while promising repayment.

In late 2025 and early 2026, he submitted multiple new repayment plans to the court. However, failing to pay within the stipulated period, the court maintained the surrender order. During the latest hearing, although new checks and schedules were presented, the court did not accept them.

Rajpal Yadav was born in Uttar Pradesh and trained at the National School of Drama. He gained recognition in 2000 with a film directed by Ram Gopal Varma and later established himself as a comedian in Bollywood.

Outside acting, his personal life has faced numerous challenges, including the early loss of his first wife, single parenting, financial crises, and legal troubles. Yadav has previously served jail time over loan cases and stated that one can remain positive even under difficult circumstances. His current imprisonment has drawn mixed reactions in Bollywood, with some expressing sympathy and others seeing it as part of the legal process.
