A new wave of political unrest has erupted in France. Following President Emmanuel Macron’s appointment of a close political ally as Prime Minister, massive antigovernmental protests have broken out across the country. Under the “Block Everything” campaign announced by left-wing parties, demonstrations spread on Wednesday (September 10) through highway blockades, burning tires, and piles of garbage set on fire.

According to a report by the Associated Press, at least 80,000 police officers have been deployed nationwide to quell the protests. However, the situation has yet to come under control. Clashes between police and demonstrators have been reported in Paris as well as other cities.

Police stated that around 250 protesters have been arrested so far. Due to blockades and violence, transportation across various regions has come to a complete halt. Industrial production and business activities have also been paralyzed because of worker strikes and the nationwide shutdown campaign.

Protesters argue that the government’s current policies are increasing the cost of living for ordinary citizens and undermining democratic processes. On the other hand, the government claims that the decision was made to ensure stability in state governance. Analysts suggest that the wave of protests may intensify further in the coming days.
