At the Women’s Kabaddi World Cup held at Mirpur Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium, the Bangladesh team defeated Thailand 40–31 on Sunday, securing a spot in the semifinals. With this victory, Bangladesh has guaranteed at least a bronze medal—a historic moment in the country’s kabaddi history.
As the referee’s final whistle blew, the players, drenched in silver sweat, celebrated on the court, parading with the red and green flag and acknowledging the cheering spectators. This marks Bangladesh’s first-ever bronze medal celebration in a Women’s Kabaddi World Cup.
During the first half, Bangladesh’s raider Shraboni Mallik suffered a sudden injury and briefly left the field. However, she quickly recovered and returned in the second half, scoring consecutive points and leading her team to victory. Before halftime, a two-point raid extended Bangladesh’s lead to 14–12. In the second half, Bangladesh’s aggressive gameplay did not allow Thailand to mount significant resistance.
Previously, Bangladesh had defeated Uganda 51–16 and Germany 35–28 in the group stage. After also defeating India 34–29, this achievement is particularly noteworthy.
Meanwhile, Iran, the runner-up of Group B, defeated Nepal 39–11 to reach the semifinals. Tomorrow, India will face its opponent on the path to the final.
In the inaugural Women’s Kabaddi World Cup in 2012, India won the title. This year, Bangladesh has achieved its highest-ever result by securing at least a bronze, creating new history in the country’s kabaddi sport.
