Legendary filmmaker Sheikh Nazrul Islam has been admitted to a private hospital in Dhaka after suffering a mild stroke on November 16 around noon. Known for directing popular films including Chander Alo, his condition deteriorated, prompting immediate ICU admission. He is currently under close medical supervision.
Director Gazi Mahbub said, “Veteran filmmaker Sheikh Nazrul Islam is at a critical stage between life and death. He is being treated in the ICU at Ibn Sina Hospital, Dhanmondi. Doctors have set a 48-hour observation period, ending Saturday at 10 a.m. By the grace of God, many have recovered; we pray for his recovery.”
The family has also appealed to the nation to pray for him. Actress Rumana Islam from Chander Alo said, “He has been unwell for a long time. His condition is currently serious. On Sunday, he was moved to the ICU. We pray to Almighty Allah for his swift recovery. Everyone should pray for him.”
Nazrul Islam debuted as a director in 1974 with the film Chabuk. He subsequently directed popular films including Noder Chand, Etim, Nagin, Masum, Eid Mubarak, Asha, Poriborton, Notun Prithibi, Didar, Salma, Bou Shashuri, Cosm, Bidhata, Strir Pawna, Chander Alo, Chander Hashi, Chokro, Singhopurush, Shob Khatam, among others. In the 1960s, he also acted in Sat Bhai Champa.
Born in Piprul village, Natore, Sheikh Nazrul Islam completed his master’s in Bengali at Rajshahi University. His contributions to cinema will remain immortal in the history of Bangladeshi film.
