Bangladesh Bank’s Deputy Governor Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman was sent back from the airport while traveling to Namibia to participate in a government program. Although his flight was scheduled for 5:00 PM on Sunday, August 31, the immigration authorities prevented him from traveling abroad at the last moment.
According to sources from the central bank, a total of 11 officials, including Dr. Habibur Rahman, were invited to attend the event in Namibia. While the other 10 officials were able to travel, only Dr. Habibur Rahman was stopped. Airport authorities stated that after completing the immigration process and waiting for boarding, he was informed that government instructions prohibited him from traveling.
Sources indicate that the Finance Ministry recently sent a list related to corruption investigations to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which has also reached the immigration authorities. The list includes the names of the central bank governor, deputy governors, and senior officials of 26 public and private banks.
Dr. Habibur Rahman was appointed Deputy Governor in February 2024. Prior to that, he served as the Chief Economist of Bangladesh Bank. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Economics at Jahangirnagar University and earned his Master’s and PhD in Applied Economics from Eastern and Western Michigan University in the United States.
