Aston Villa have ended a three-decade-long wait by winning the Europa League title. The English club became champions of Europe’s second-tier competition after defeating German club Freiburg 3–0 in the final.
In the final held on Wednesday at Beşiktaş Park in Turkey, Aston Villa played confident football from the beginning. Freiburg could not find much success against the tactical plan of coach Unai Emery.
Towards the end of the first half, Villa completely took control of the match. In the 41st minute, Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans gave the team the lead with a brilliant volley from a pass by Morgan Rogers.
Before Freiburg could recover from the shock of the first goal, Aston Villa doubled the lead in added time. Argentine midfielder Emiliano Buendía curled a shot from outside the box into the net.
After the break, Freiburg tried to come back into the match. However, in the 58th minute, Villa struck again. Morgan Rogers scored the third goal with a perfect finish from a low cross by Buendía. After that, the German club could not return to the match.
With this victory, Aston Villa won their first major trophy since the 1996 League Cup. At the same time, they lifted a European trophy again after 44 years.
On the other hand, with this title, Unai Emery further strengthened his dominance in the Europa League. This is his fifth Europa League title as a coach. Previously, he won three consecutive titles with Sevilla and one with Villarreal.
With this achievement, the Spanish manager has further strengthened his position as the most successful coach in Europa League history.
