After 20 years, Bangladesh’s under-20 women’s football team is set to begin a new chapter on the international stage. The Under-20 Women’s Asian Cup starts today at Thammasat Stadium in Pathum Thani, where Bangladesh’s first opponent is Thailand. The match will kick off at 7 PM Bangladesh time.
Having dominated the South Asian stage for years, Bangladesh’s women now have the opportunity to gain experience in Asia’s bigger competitions. The teams have participated six times in the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship at U-18, U-19, and U-20 levels, winning five titles. However, competition at the Asian level presents a new challenge.
During the Asian Cup qualifiers held last August in Laos, Bangladesh secured qualification for the tournament for the first time with two wins in three matches. The team’s preparation and patience will be tested against Asia’s stronger opponents.
Coach Peter Butler stated, “We have brought many young players for whom this is the first international experience. Participation itself is a big achievement, and I hope it will be educational and the girls will learn a lot.”
Thailand has much more experience than Bangladesh, having participated in the U-20 World Cup in 2004 and regularly in the Asian Cup. Butler warned, “Thailand has a rich football history. We need to play cautiously. I hope the girls perform positively.”
Bangladesh has lost only one of their last five matches. However, the difference in skill is significant compared to the group’s other opponents, China and Vietnam. China has twice been runners-up in the U-20 World Cup and won the Asian Cup in 2006, while Vietnam reached four finals at the U-19 level. Bangladesh will face Vietnam in the group stage on April 7.
This tournament is not only a competitive platform for Bangladesh but also an opportunity for young players to gain international-standard experience. Coach Butler expressed hope, “The girls will prove their abilities just as in the qualifiers and will make new history for Bangladeshi football.”
