Ending years of anticipation, Apple is finally set to enter the foldable iPhone market. There is strong speculation that the company may unveil its first-ever foldable iPhone at a special event on September 9. More than five years after Samsung introduced the first foldable smartphones to the market, the iPhone maker is now preparing to enter this new technology segment.
Apple’s annual iPhone launch event generates significant interest among technology enthusiasts every year. However, expectations surrounding this year’s event are comparatively higher. This is because, alongside the new iPhone, important changes are also expected in the company’s product and leadership structure. Tim Cook is in the process of stepping down as chief executive officer, and former vice president of the hardware engineering division John Ternus is expected to take over his position.
There is speculation in the technology industry that Apple’s first foldable phone could be named the “iPhone Ultra.” Various reports have also claimed that its price could exceed $2,000. This would make it one of Apple’s most expensive iPhones.
According to preliminary information, the phone may feature a 5.5-inch display when folded. When unfolded, the screen could expand to approximately 7.8 inches. In other words, when fully opened, the device could resemble a smaller-sized iPad. When folded, it could be somewhat shorter and wider than conventional iPhones.
Apple may make some compromises in the camera department to keep the device thin and easy to carry. According to speculation, it may not include a telephoto camera. Instead, it could feature a dual rear-camera setup consisting of a main camera and an ultra-wide lens.
Apple’s MagSafe technology is also expected to be available for charging and accessory use. However, several reports suggest that, to save space, Apple may eliminate Face ID this time and instead place a fingerprint sensor with Touch ID on the side of the phone.
The foldable iPhone could take advantage of its larger display to allow users to operate multiple apps simultaneously. When the device is unfolded, two apps could potentially be run side by side on opposite sides of the screen.
Although the device would offer a large, iPad-like display when unfolded, it is expected to run the iOS operating system rather than iPadOS. Technology analysts believe that using a powerful next-generation chip should prevent major problems in running iOS on the larger display.
One of the biggest problems with foldable phones is the visible crease in the middle of the display. On many devices from competing companies, this crease can be seen with the naked eye. Apple may have an advantage in this area, according to speculation. Various reports claim that the crease on the new iPhone’s display will be comparatively less visible.
The event may not focus solely on the foldable iPhone; announcements regarding the iPhone 18 series could also be made. In particular, various information and rumours have already circulated regarding the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models.
However, the standard iPhone 18 model may not arrive in September and could instead reach the market approximately six months later, according to speculation. If that happens, it would represent a major change in Apple’s traditional iPhone launch strategy, with the premium versions potentially reaching the market before the standard model for the first time.
Alongside the iPhone, Apple is also expected to make new announcements regarding its smart-home products. In particular, a new version of the HomePod could be launched alongside an artificial intelligence-powered update to Siri, according to speculation.
Recently, technology researchers claimed to have found indications of several unreleased Apple products after analysing a preview version of macOS. Alongside a new HomePod, the findings also reportedly pointed to the possible existence of camera-equipped AirPods.
According to the information that has emerged, Apple is planning to add a small camera to AirPods and use it as Siri’s “eyes.” In other words, the camera would not be intended for taking photographs or recording videos. Instead, it would collect limited visual information about what the user is looking at and assist the artificial intelligence-powered assistant.
Such technology could raise questions about users’ personal privacy. In particular, as concerns over camera-equipped wearable devices continue to grow around the world, how Apple implements the technology and what measures it takes to protect users’ information could become an important issue.
Overall, after years of anticipation, the potential debut of the foldable iPhone, along with the various rumours surrounding the new iPhone, HomePod and AirPods, is set to make this year’s Apple event one of the most closely watched events in the technology world.
