Morocco eventually defeated Nigeria 4–2 in a penalty shootout to advance to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations after the semifinal ended 0–0 in regulation time in Rabat. Although the match ended goalless after 120 minutes, the penalty shootout proved fortunate for Morocco. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou ensured victory by saving two penalties, while Youssef En-Nesyri converted the decisive spot kick.
Morocco are now on course to win their first continental title after a 50-year wait. They will face 2021 champions Senegal in the final on Sunday, while Nigeria will take on Egypt in the third-place playoff the following day.
During the 120 minutes of play, neither team created many clear-cut chances. However, Morocco were unable to capitalize on their better opportunities due to outstanding saves by Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. Nigeria’s attack was largely ineffective, and their star forward Victor Osimhen failed to make a significant impact.
Morocco’s attacking play was consistent and efficient. A chance came for Ayoub El Kaabi from an Achraf Hakimi corner, but hesitation at the final moment prevented a goal. After Bounou’s crucial saves, Youssef En-Nesyri sealed Morocco’s path to the final with his decisive penalty.
Morocco have reached the Africa Cup of Nations final for the first time since their defeat to Tunisia in 2004. The final in Rabat will see them face Senegal, who beat Egypt 1–0 in the earlier semifinal. This victory has sparked a festive mood among football fans across Africa.
