Jahangirnagar University (JU) administration has permanently expelled 64 Chhatra League leaders and cancelled the degrees of 73 former students involved in the brutal attack on teachers and students during the anti-discrimination movement at the university.
This information was announced by JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan during a briefing at 3:30 AM on August 5, following a Syndicate meeting held late on August 4.
The Vice-Chancellor stated that a total of 229 individuals were involved in the violent assault on teachers during the July anti-discrimination movement last year. Among them, 130 are current students and 99 are former students.
Among current students:
64 have been permanently expelled from the university.
37 have been suspended for 2 years.
8 have been suspended for 1 year.
1 has been suspended for 6 months.
20 have been cleared of all charges after investigation.
Among former students:
Certificates of 73 have been permanently cancelled.
Certificates of 6 have been suspended for 2 years.
20 have been cleared of all charges.
The Vice-Chancellor further emphasized,
“The university administration is taking a strict stance. No one will be spared for committing crimes. Justice will be served based on evidence and fairness.”
He also mentioned that the full investigation report will be sent to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) due to involvement of external militants, planning of the attack, and questions raised about police behavior during the incident inside the university campus.
Previously, the university administration had temporarily suspended the accused students and withheld their certificates. After a prolonged investigation, the final punitive measures have now been enforced.
Teachers and students across the university have welcomed this decision, stating,
“This marks the beginning of breaking the culture of impunity.”
