Scientists have warned of a potential catastrophic natural disaster along the U.S. West Coast. According to their latest research, a major earthquake in the Cascadia Subduction Zone could trigger an immediate mega tsunami with waves reaching up to 1,000 feet high.

Researchers state that such a tsunami would cause sudden land subsidence and massive waves along the coastal areas, putting millions of people, critical infrastructure, and the environment at significant risk. Tina Dura, a researcher from Virginia Tech, explained that the Cascadia Subduction Zone stretches about 600 miles, from Northern California to Vancouver Island. Here, the Juan de Fuca Plate is pressing beneath the North American Plate, accumulating stress.

The study indicates a 15% chance of an 8.0-magnitude or larger earthquake occurring in the next 50 years. If an earthquake occurs, the coastal land could suddenly drop by 6.5 feet, intensifying the tsunami waves. Cities such as Seattle, Portland, and other areas in Northern California could be flooded within minutes.

Researchers have cautioned that the combination of land subsidence and extreme waves could create historically unprecedented devastation. They urged local governments, policymakers, and citizens to immediately implement emergency warning systems, evacuation plans, and resilient infrastructure measures.
