North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has threatened to rapidly expand his country’s nuclear arsenal. He condemned the ongoing military exercises by the United States and South Korea as “an expression of hostile intent,” according to the country’s state-run news agency.

Kim made the remarks on Tuesday while inspecting a North Korean naval destroyer. He stated that the exercises represent “a clear expression of provocations for war” and pose a threat to North Korea.

He further noted that the inclusion of “nuclear elements” in the drills indicates that North Korea is on a path to rapidly expand its nuclear weapons program.

The annual ‘Ulchi Freedom Shield’ exercises began this week. These large-scale field drills integrate advanced measures to respond to North Korea’s growing nuclear capabilities and the reactions of both North Korea and the United States. The exercises are scheduled to last 11 days, with half of the 40 field training sessions rescheduled for September.

South Korean officials said the change in the exercise schedule reflects President Yoon Suk-yeol’s call to reduce tensions. However, analysts doubt that Pyongyang will respond positively.

North Korea regularly characterizes these exercises as preparations for an attack and often conducts weapons tests as a show of force. Analysts note, “Through this move, North Korea is signaling that it does not agree to denuclearization proposals and is determined to permanently enhance its nuclear arsenal.”

According to a 2024 study by the Federation of American Scientists, North Korea likely possesses enough fissile material to produce up to 90 nuclear warheads, although the actual number of assembled weapons is estimated to be around 50.

Discussions are expected this month in Washington between U.S. President Donald Trump and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, with efforts to limit North Korea’s nuclear capabilities being a primary agenda item.
