US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has faced allegations of compromising military personnel and missions. A Pentagon watchdog report revealed that Hegseth used the messaging app Signal to share sensitive information regarding military operations against Houthi rebels in Yemen.
According to the report, Hegseth used his personal phone for official purposes, violating protocols. The report emphasized the need for Pentagon personnel to be trained in secure communication and proper handling of classified information. Signal is not authorized for sharing classified data, although Hegseth has the right to declassify information.
The information shared in Signal chats involved Hegseth, Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard. Hegseth also shared details with his wife, brother, and personal lawyer, who were not authorized recipients.
Hegseth claimed on social media that no classified information was shared, asserting his complete innocence. Lawmakers, however, said such actions could cost any other official their job.
Separately, he is under investigation for allegedly ordering a second attack on a drug-laden boat in the Caribbean, resulting in two previously surviving casualties being killed.
Hegseth has also faced prior allegations of sexual harassment, excessive drinking, and financial mismanagement, which he denies. The incident highlights the importance of secure and approved communication channels for high-level government officials.
