After nearly two years of conflict, an independent United Nations investigative commission has issued a historic ruling on Israel’s operations in Gaza. The investigation explicitly stated that the actions constitute genocide, holding the State of Israel accountable.

Navi Pillay, Chairperson of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, told Al Jazeera that statements and orders from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and President Isaac Herzog were central to determining their responsibility.

Pillay said, “As representatives of the state, they issued genocidal orders. Therefore, this is not just a matter of individual crimes, but the State of Israel itself is held accountable for genocide.”

The report notes that Israeli authorities and security forces acted with the intent to partially or completely destroy Palestinians, which clearly falls under the international legal definition of genocide.

Meanwhile, Israel’s Foreign Ministry has rejected the report, calling it “false” and “Hamas propaganda.” Israel’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Daniel Meron, described it as a “defamatory” and “unjustified” claim.

This is not the first time Israel has faced allegations of genocide in Gaza on the international stage. However, many consider this UN investigative report to be a “historic turning point.”
