Ukraine’s military has acknowledged that Russian forces are attempting to enter the eastern industrial region of Dnipropetrovsk and strengthen their positions there.

Victor Trehubov of the Dnipro Operational-Strategic Group of Troops told the BBC, “This is the first large-scale attack in the Dnipropetrovsk region.” However, he emphasized that Russia’s advance has already been halted.

Throughout the summer, Russia claimed that it had entered the Dnipropetrovsk region. However, Ukrainian reports indicate that Russia has not yet fully crossed the region’s boundaries.

The Ukrainian DeepState Mapping Project reported that Russia has taken control of two villages inside Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizke and Novohrigorivka. However, the Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff denied these claims, stating, “We are still controlling Zaporizke, and active fighting continues in the Novohrigorivka area.”

Capturing Dnipropetrovsk would be a major success for Russia, as it is Ukraine’s second-largest heavy industrial hub and a strategically important area. Before the war, the region had a population of over three million.

Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. However, U.S.-led diplomatic efforts to end the war have yet to yield results.

Putin reportedly told Trump that he would be willing to stop the war if Ukraine handed over the territories of Donetsk currently under Ukrainian control. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European Union leaders have called this idea a “trap.”

EU foreign policy chief Kaya Kalas stated, “Russia has not shown any concessions so far. They are the aggressor, and accepting their terms would be a mistake.”

Despite rising tensions in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukrainian forces have been able to halt the Russian advance. High Russian casualties and slow progress have revealed weaknesses on the battlefield.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government has relaxed travel laws for men. Now, men aged 18 to 22 will be allowed to travel abroad. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stated, “We want Ukrainian citizens to maintain their connection with their country.”

Amid the ongoing war and diplomatic efforts, Ukraine and its Western allies are trying to build a sustained resistance against Russia. Zelensky has called on Western nations for security assurances to strengthen Ukraine’s long-term defense capabilities.
