Recent remarks by U.S. diplomat Tom Barrack in Lebanon have sparked intense controversy. On Tuesday, following a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, he made comments directed at local journalists that many considered offensive.

Barrack, who serves as the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy to Syria, told journalists, “If you cannot be civilized, then we will leave. The root of problems in the Middle East is this unrest.”

During the press briefing, while attempting to curb journalists’ tendency to ask questions simultaneously, he further stated, “When things get chaotic, it feels like animal behavior. So if you want to know what’s happening, please be civilized, be patient, and show courtesy.”

His remarks quickly drew widespread criticism across Lebanon and the Arab world. Critics described the comments as indicative of a colonial mindset and disrespectful toward local journalists.

The Lebanese Presidency expressed regret over the remarks in a statement, saying, “We fully respect journalists and appreciate their professional and national responsibilities.”

The Lebanese Journalists’ Union has called for a boycott of all future events involving Tom Barrack until he issues a formal apology.

In response, media outlets and analysts across the Arab world have urged U.S. diplomats to be more sensitive in their conduct. They emphasized that this is not only a matter of diplomatic etiquette but also a question of respect for local culture and professionalism.

Notable Reactions:
The incident has raised significant questions regarding the professional environment for journalists in Lebanon and the broader context of international diplomatic relations. Many believe such remarks undermine cultural and ethnic sensitivities.

Analysts suggest that this controversy could have far-reaching implications for international relations and may create tensions between local and global media communities.
