On Friday, Trump posted on his social media platform “Truth Social” that in response to Medvedev’s “provocative statements,” he had ordered two nuclear submarines to be deployed in “appropriate regions.”
He wrote, “I have ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just words.”
The day before, Medvedev warned Trump to be aware of Russia’s “Dead Hand” nuclear system—a Cold War-era automatic retaliation mechanism.
The war of words between Trump and Medvedev is not new. In June, they also clashed on social media over nuclear weapons and relations with Iran. This week, the conflict has flared up again.
This week, Trump also said, “There is almost no business between Russia and the USA, and there won’t be. Medvedev, this failed former president, should watch his words. He is entering very dangerous territory!”
In response, Medvedev posted, “If a few words from a former Russian president can make the current President of the United States so nervous, then it means Russia is on the right path.”
He then referenced the popular TV series The Walking Dead, saying, “Dead economy, Dead Hand, and Trump’s favorite ‘Walking Dead’ — reminding us that destruction is also in Russia’s hands.”
Though Trump has been active in trying to end the Ukraine war during his second term, his efforts have not been fruitful. Instead, he has been criticized internationally for calling Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a “dictator” and suggesting concessions of Ukrainian territory to Russia.
Recently, Trump gave Russia a 10-12 day deadline to stop its offensive, warning that if not, the US would impose tough economic sanctions. After Russia shelled Kyiv on July 28, Trump said, “What Russia is doing is disgusting.”
Medvedev described Trump’s ultimatum as “theatrical,” saying, “Russia does not care about these threats.”
He added, “Trump should remember—Russia is not Israel, nor even Iran. Every new ultimatum is a step closer to war.”
In the current global situation, where the Ukraine war continues and international diplomacy is in turmoil, the nuclear war of words between Trump and Medvedev has raised fresh concerns. Experts say such behavior by the leaders of two superpowers only increases tensions, potentially pushing the world toward unwanted consequences.
