The much-anticipated summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will begin today at 11:30 a.m. local time (GMT 19:30) at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska, United States. This will be the first private meeting between the two leaders since Helsinki in 2018.

The main topic of discussion is expected to be an end to the Ukraine war and a potential ceasefire agreement. Diplomatic sources indicate that both sides may discuss territorial concessions. On August 6, Moscow sent a proposal to the United States suggesting that Donbas be fully placed under Russian control in exchange for halting advances in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. The proposal also includes returning some occupied areas of Sumy and Kharkiv.

Trump said on Monday, “This will be a kind of ‘feel-based’ discussion where I want to understand what Putin wants.”

Analysts believe the meeting may provide indications of initial peace initiatives. However, the key question remains—if the proposed terms are not acceptable to Kyiv, will Ukraine accept the outcome of these discussions?
