U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15. The main purpose of the meeting is to seek a resolution to end the war in Ukraine.
However, Trump has hinted that a potential peace agreement may involve some territorial exchanges—an idea that has already sparked controversy. Speaking at the White House on Friday during a meeting with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Trump said, “We will start talks with Russia. We will take back some things, exchange some things—it will be beneficial for both sides.”
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov also confirmed the meeting and referred to Alaska as a “logical location.”
However, Ukraine and its European allies have long opposed any agreement that would hand over occupied territories—such as Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia—to Russia. On the other hand, Putin has repeatedly stated that Ukraine must cede these areas and halt Western military aid as conditions for any deal.
