A shadow of grief has fallen over the academic community following the deaths of three students from three separate universities within a few hours. Preliminary reports suggest that two students from the University of Dhaka and Jahangirnagar University died by suicide, while a student from Barishal University died due to a brain hemorrhage.
In Hazaribagh, Dhaka, a final-year Chemistry student at the University of Dhaka, Seemanto (25), was found unconscious after consuming a toxic substance at his rented house. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 1:30 AM on Thursday, where doctors declared him dead. Police believe he committed suicide using an insecticide. Family sources said that he was mentally distressed due to his mother’s death during COVID-19 and other family crises.
Meanwhile, the former English student of Jahangirnagar University, Sabit Mahmud Shawon, was found dead in his North Dhaka residence on Friday morning. Police suspect this may also be a suicide. Friends reported that he had been mentally distressed recently and had posted unusual content on social media.
Additionally, Imtiaz Ahmed Nafiz, a Mathematics student of Barishal University, passed away on Friday morning at his home in Gournadi due to brain hemorrhage. Family members noted he had previously been admitted to a specialized hospital in Dhaka for treatment.
The untimely death of this talented student has created an atmosphere of grief on campus. Peers and teachers have expressed deep sorrow on social media. These incidents have highlighted the urgent need to strengthen mental health support for students.
