Tension over possible phone call with Trump: Taiwan President signals defiance of China’s objections

Taiwan President William Lai Ching-te has expressed interest in holding direct talks with U.S. President Donald Trump. This potential contact has created new tensions in international diplomatic circles, as such a move would break more than four decades of diplomatic precedent and could provoke a strong reaction from China.

On Wednesday, Trump told reporters that he is willing to speak with Lai. At the same time, Washington is reportedly considering a large-scale arms sale to Taiwan. This marks the second time Trump has hinted at communication with Taiwan’s leader after his visit to Beijing.

In 1979, Washington shifted diplomatic recognition away from Taiwan and established relations with China (Beijing). Since then, there has been no direct communication between the presidents of the United States and Taiwan. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force if necessary.

Following Trump’s remarks, Taiwan’s government stated that it is committed to maintaining the “current status quo in the Taiwan Strait.” It also described China as the main obstacle to regional stability.

The office of President Lai said he is willing to discuss these issues with Trump and also expressed optimism regarding U.S. military assistance.

Trump said, “I talk to everyone.” He also mentioned that he had a “good discussion” with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to Beijing and indicated that the Taiwan issue may also have been discussed.

Meanwhile, the U.S. administration is reviewing a potential $14 billion arms package, which is expected to significantly enhance Taiwan’s defense capabilities.

China has long opposed U.S. military assistance to Taiwan. Therefore, reports of possible Trump–Lai communication may further increase tensions between Beijing and Washington, according to analysts.
