In a widely discussed case involving the Norwegian royal family, Marius Borg Høiby, stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, has been sentenced to four years in prison for rape and domestic violence by an Oslo court.
After a seven-week trial, the court found him guilty of two rape charges and multiple counts of violent behavior. One of the incidents reportedly took place in the basement of the Crown Prince’s residence. He was, however, acquitted of two other rape charges.
The court stated that one of the victims was not in a position to defend herself at the time, and the crime was committed in that vulnerable situation.
During the trial, evidence included his drug addiction issues, personal videos, and messages exchanged with a former partner. The prosecution argued that the victims were unconscious or unable to resist during the incidents.
Høiby denied serious allegations but admitted to some offenses, including cannabis transport, violating restrictions, and traffic law violations.
He was also found guilty of assaulting a former girlfriend, including repeated attacks and attempted strangulation between mid-2022 and late 2023.
He attended the hearing via video link from prison. Both his defense team and prosecutors have indicated the possibility of appeal.
Although not a member of the royal line of succession, Høiby has long been in the public spotlight due to his connection with the royal family.
Observers say the case has affected public perception of Norway’s monarchy, though majority support for the system still remains.
