Cape Verde’s veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, who gained international attention with his impressive performance at the FIFA World Cup, has received special permission from Chile’s top football league to use his popular nickname on his jersey.
The Chilean Primera División authorities approved an exception allowing the 40-year-old goalkeeper to display “Vozinha” instead of his family surname on the back of his shirt.
According to league regulations, players are usually required to use their official surname on their jerseys. However, following a unanimous decision among clubs, Vozinha has been granted special approval to continue using the name by which he is widely recognized.
The decision came as part of discussions surrounding his expected move to Chilean giants Colo-Colo. Reports suggest that using his famous nickname on the jersey was one of Vozinha’s important conditions before joining the club.
However, his transfer to Colo-Colo has not yet been officially completed. Although both sides have reached an agreement, the goalkeeper has not signed the final contract.
Vozinha was scheduled to arrive in Chile’s capital Santiago on Tuesday, but visa complications followed by personal reasons prevented him from boarding his planned flight.
Colo-Colo director Jaime Pizarro and head coach Fernando Ortiz confirmed that the club remains in regular contact with the player’s representatives. They hope Vozinha will resolve his personal issues soon and join the team.
While permission to use his nickname has removed one major obstacle in the transfer process, his delayed arrival has created some uncertainty among supporters.
However, club officials remain optimistic that all remaining formalities will be completed soon and the World Cup-famous goalkeeper will begin his journey with Colo-Colo.
