Ending a 25-year wait, South Africa has won a historic Test series on Indian soil. In the second and final Test held in Guwahati, the Proteas defeated India by a massive 408 runs to take the series 2-0.
Chasing a target of 549 on the fifth day, India’s batting lineup completely collapsed, being bowled out for just 140, marking India’s largest home defeat by runs.
South African spinner Simon Harmer was the hero of the match, claiming six wickets and dismantling India’s batting order. After winning the first Test on a fast-paced pitch, South Africa again defeated India with spin, demonstrating perfect preparation and planning.
Except for Ravindra Jadeja’s resilient 54-run innings, no Indian batsman could withstand Harmer’s onslaught. After being stumped by Keshav Maharaj, India’s innings quickly ended, and Mohammad Siraj’s dismissal marked South Africa’s massive victory celebration.
Earlier, South Africa declared their second innings at 260/5, setting a challenging target for India. However, India struggled from the outset. Sai Sudharsan and Kuldeep Yadav briefly survived at the start of the day but could not capitalize. Harmer’s relentless attack broke India’s batting order.
In the first innings, South Africa’s Senuwan Muthusamy scored a brilliant century (109), contributing to a strong team total. Marco Jansen also excelled with both bat and ball, taking six wickets and scoring a sparkling 93 in the first innings.
This defeat raises new questions about India’s recent performance, as it marks their fifth loss in the last seven home Tests. Even on spin-friendly pitches, surrendering to opposition spin bowling will force India to rethink strategies.
This historic series win is a major achievement for South Africa, while for Indian cricket, it serves as a cautionary signal that past dominance can no longer be taken for granted.
