Six shops destroyed in market fire in Hajiganj, Chandpur

A fire broke out in a market located on Station Road in Hajiganj Upazila, Chandpur, causing at least six shops to burn down. The incident occurred Friday (27 February) at night. Upon receiving the news, two units of the Fire Service reached the scene and controlled the fire after about one and a half hours.

Nurunnabi, owner of the affected Ali Ashraf Market, reported that six out of twelve shops in the market were damaged to varying degrees. Three shops were severely affected. Shops selling furniture, tiles and sanitary items, hardware, and pipes were destroyed by the fire. Preliminary estimates claim damage of approximately half a million Taka.

Locals said that upon noticing the fire, they quickly informed the Rural Electrification Office and Fire Service. According to former Motowalli of Hajiganj Big Mosque, Principal Md. Alamgir Kabir Patowary, the quick disconnection of electricity and immediate presence of the Fire Service prevented a major disaster.

Station Officer Shahidul Islam of Hajiganj Fire Service said the cause of the fire is still unknown. However, due to prompt action, the entire market was saved from complete destruction. With the combined efforts of two units and locals, the fire was brought under control. While the incident caused concern in the area, no casualties were reported immediately. Authorities are working to determine the exact extent of the damage.
