On Monday morning, a shooting attack by gunmen at Ramot Junction in Jerusalem left six people dead and eight others injured. This is one of the deadliest gun attacks in the city in recent years.

Israeli police reported that two gunmen arrived at the scene in a vehicle and opened fire at people waiting at a bus stop. However, an off-duty soldier and a civilian returned fire, successfully “neutralizing” the attackers.

Among the dead were five men and a 60-year-old woman. Hospitals reported that two of the injured were in serious condition. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, although Hamas praised it.

During a visit to the scene, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told reporters, “Israel is currently engaged in an intense war against terrorism on multiple fronts.” He added, “We are now pursuing the attackers and those who aided them. Stronger measures will be taken.”

The Israeli military said soldiers are encircling Palestinian villages near the city of Ramallah to suppress terrorism and strengthen defense capabilities.

Police spokesman Lt. Dean Elsdunne said, “The gunmen deliberately targeted civilians at the bus stop. Armed civilians present at the scene immediately reacted and killed the attackers on the spot.”

Dashcam footage from the time of the attack shows people running for safety. One of the injured, Ester Lugasi, told Israeli TV from the hospital, “I thought I was not going to survive.”

Israeli President Isaac Herzog wrote on social media, “Innocent citizens, children, and adults were brutally killed and injured on the streets. The world must understand what we are facing.”

French President Emmanuel Macron strongly condemned the attack, while the new UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper called it “horrific.”

The office of the Palestinian president also condemned the attack, stating, “Violence against Palestinian and Israeli civilians is unacceptable. We denounce all forms of terrorism.”

Meanwhile, Hamas praised the attack, calling it a “heroic operation by two Palestinian resistance fighters,” claiming it as a natural response to Israel’s ongoing oppression.
