Sheikh Bashir Uddin’s Tenure Ends with Swearing-In of New Cabinet

With the swearing-in of the new cabinet, Sheikh Bashir Uddin’s tenure as Commerce Adviser is coming to an end. After the new cabinet assumes office on Tuesday (February 17), his advisory position will automatically conclude. He will then return to his own company and resume duties as Managing Director.

He shared this information at a farewell event held at the Ministry of Commerce on Monday. His wife, Iffsia Mahin, was present at the event. Senior ministry officials extended floral greetings and recalled his contributions during his tenure.

In his farewell speech, Sheikh Bashir Uddin said he never compromised on ethical matters during his tenure and always prioritized the country’s interests. He expressed satisfaction at being able to work through coordinated efforts among various departments and agencies of the ministry. Addressing government officials, he said he had directly witnessed how efficiently the administration can function under proper leadership.

He also noted that positive reflections in the conduct of government employees are needed following recent political changes. He urged officials to reject any unjust or unethical directives on principle and requested them to fully cooperate with the new leadership.

Sheikh Bashir Uddin took charge as Adviser for Commerce and for Textiles and Jute in the interim government on November 10, 2024. On the same day, he stepped down from his position as Managing Director of AkijBashir Group. Later, in April 2025, he was given additional responsibility for the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism. In August of the same year, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

His industrial group operates businesses in ceramics, sanitaryware and bathware, tableware, jute, steel, particle board, tea, and other sectors. After completing his advisory responsibilities, he plans to play an active role again in the private sector.
