OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has faced widespread discussion and criticism on social media after suggesting an idea of creating personalized AI-generated podcasts for children using daily family information.

In response to his proposal, a short comment from Alex Hirsch, creator of the popular animated series “Gravity Falls,” went viral and received significant support.

In a post on Friday, Altman described the idea as an “excellent practical example.” He suggested that parents could connect their family calendars and children’s interests with a new product called ChatGPT Work to create personalized AI podcasts for children to listen to on their way to school every morning.

The podcast could include information about a child’s afternoon activities, another family member’s upcoming birthday, or important news of the day.

However, the idea triggered mixed reactions online. Many users questioned whether technology-generated content should replace direct conversations between parents and children.

Amid the criticism, Alex Hirsch replied to Altman’s post with a simple question:

“Why not just talk to your kids directly?”

The comment quickly went viral and received strong public support.

At the time of reporting, Altman’s original post had received around 9,600 reactions and nearly 300 reposts, while Hirsch’s reply received more than 122,000 reactions and around 9,000 reposts.

Altman has previously spoken in favor of using AI in everyday life. In a television interview last year, while discussing raising his newborn child, he said he found it difficult to imagine that period without ChatGPT. However, he also acknowledged that people successfully raised children long before AI existed.

OpenAI is also focusing on developing trusted technology for families and parents. The company recently posted a job opening for a product manager specializing in creating safe and reliable digital experiences for parents and families.

However, concerns over AI use among children and families are increasing. While companies are adding safety controls and parental features, some families have also raised legal complaints regarding sensitive interactions with ChatGPT.

OpenAI has said it is continuously working to improve model responses in sensitive situations.

The central question surrounding Altman’s latest idea remains whether AI will become a useful assistant for busy families or whether excessive dependence on technology could reduce natural communication between parents and children.
