In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, at least three people were killed in a Russian attack on Ukraine’s southeastern Zaporizhzhia region on Sunday, according to Governor Ivan Fedorov’s Telegram update.
Simultaneously, a major fire broke out at an oil depot near Sochi in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region following a drone strike by Ukrainian forces. Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratiev reported that 120 firefighters were deployed to control the blaze. Air traffic at Sochi airport was temporarily suspended during the incident.
The Ukrainian military claimed responsibility for a series of drone attacks inside Russian territory targeting refineries, airports, and electronics factories. In Russia’s Voronezh region, the governor confirmed that four people were injured and several fires broke out due to Ukrainian drone strikes.
In southern Ukraine’s Mykolaiv city, a Russian missile strike injured seven people and caused significant damage to homes, according to Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched 76 drones and 7 missiles, intercepting 60 drones and one missile. Despite this, 16 drones and 6 missiles managed to strike eight locations across Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry stated it destroyed 93 Ukrainian drones overnight, including one in the Krasnodar region and 60 over the Black Sea.
Political and Diplomatic Developments:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that following talks in Istanbul, Turkey, an agreement has been reached to exchange 1,200 prisoners with Russia, with the prisoner lists being finalized. Russia has not yet responded.
Zelensky appointed Anatolii Krivonozhko as the new commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, a position he has effectively held for nearly a year.
Ukraine also revealed three new sanction packages targeting, among others, the captains of Russian shadow oil tankers.
China and Russia have commenced joint naval exercises near Vladivostok, Russia, in the Sea of Japan, set to last three days.
At a gathering of one million young Catholics near Rome, Pope Leo expressed solidarity: “We stand with the youth of Gaza; we stand with the youth of Ukraine.”
