Reflection AI, founded in March 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Iwanis Antonoglou, has raised $2 billion in just one year, boosting the company’s valuation to $8 billion. Initially focused on autonomous coding agents, the startup is now moving to establish itself as an open-source alternative, competing with companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.
Misha Laskin, CEO of Reflection AI, stated that their goal is to keep models and AI weights open to everyone and allow large organizations and governments to build “sovereign AI” using their platform. The company plans to release its frontier language model by next year.
Major investors, including NVIDIA, Sequoia, Citi, and Eric Schmidt, participated in the new funding round. The company hopes this initiative will strengthen the competitive position of open-source AI in the United States.
