On the very first night of the new Champions League season, Real Madrid made history. French star Kylian Mbappé scored two penalty goals to help his team, reduced to 10 men, defeat French club Marseille 2–1. This victory marked the 200th win for the 15-time champions in the competition—making them the first team to achieve this milestone in the modern rebranded European Cup.

At Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night, Marseille initially took the lead. US footballer Timothy Weah, son of legend George Weah, scored with an assist from Mason Greenwood. However, in the 29th minute, Mbappé converted a penalty after a foul on Rodrigo to equalize. Later, in the 81st minute, the French forward scored again from another penalty after the ball touched a defender’s hand.

With this brace, Mbappé reached 50 goals in just 64 matches for Madrid, matching the record of legendary striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The match intensity increased in the 72nd minute when Madrid captain Dani Carvajal was shown a red card for headbutting Marseille goalkeeper Jérôme Prior. Despite being a man down, the hosts managed to maintain their lead and secure the victory.

For Real Madrid’s new coach, Xabi Alonso, this was his Champions League debut match, which he started with a win.

In other notable matches of the day, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus played out a thrilling 4–4 draw, while Tottenham defeated Villarreal 1–0, thanks to an own goal by the opponent’s goalkeeper.
