As of the 2025–26 fiscal year, over four million taxpayers have filed online income tax returns, according to the National Board of Revenue (NBR). A notice issued on Wednesday detailed these figures.
Filing is mandatory for all taxpayers except senior citizens over 65, the physically ill, people with special needs, Bangladeshis abroad, legal representatives of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh. Around 5 million have registered for e-return this year, with over 4 million already submitted.
Monthly submissions: August – 251,784; September – 301,302; October – 454,076; November – 1,040,472; December – 978,198; January – 655,363; February – 294,987; first four days of March – 36,700. Last year, 1,399,655 filed by the deadline.
Of the submitted returns, over 2.8 million men and nearly 1.1 million women filed. Salary earners: 1.6 million men, 480,000 women; house rent income: 188,000 men, 84,000 women. Income below taxable limit: 1.4 million men, 765,000 women; 5–10 lakh BDT: 500,000 men, 200,000 women; 10–20 lakh BDT: 165,000 men, 47,000 women; 20–40 lakh BDT: 54,000 men, 11,000 women; over 40 lakh BDT: 29,000 men, 5,000 women. About 50,000 taxpayers paid surcharge based on assets.
Bangladeshis abroad can file online via OTP after email registration. Authorized representatives can also file on behalf of taxpayers. E-return submission allows online payment via debit/credit card, internet banking, or mobile financial services. Acknowledgment and tax certificates are issued automatically. Errors can be corrected within 180 days; over 56,000 amended returns have already been filed.
