At a Mediterranean restaurant in San Francisco, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently attended an exclusive dinner where he discussed the company’s future plans, consumer-focused applications, and AI-powered devices in detail. Around a dozen tech journalists were present at the event.
Altman stated that OpenAI is not limiting itself to ChatGPT or the GPT-5 model. As part of a new vision, Fidji Simo—who will soon join OpenAI as the CEO of its applications division—will oversee consumer-focused applications. These may include an AI-powered web browser designed to compete with Google Chrome, and potentially an AI-based social networking application that aims to surpass the limitations of current social media platforms.
Altman also confirmed that OpenAI is considering investing in “Merge Labs,” a brain-computer interface company that would compete with Elon Musk’s Neuralink. However, it remains unclear how directly this technology will integrate with OpenAI’s models or devices.
During the dinner, Altman and OpenAI Vice President Nick Turley also addressed some of the controversies surrounding GPT-5’s release. Altman admitted, “We really believe we made a mistake in shutting down GPT-4 as we did.” He added that future transitions will provide users with sufficient adjustment time. Turley noted that GPT-5’s responses are already being designed to be more human, warm, and polite, avoiding repetition of negative user behaviors.
Early feedback indicated that GPT-5’s direct and concise responses were not universally well-received. Nevertheless, within just 48 hours of GPT-5’s launch, OpenAI’s API usage doubled, signaling strong demand for the technology.
The key message of the dinner was that OpenAI is no longer limited to GPT-5 or ChatGPT. Altman envisions a large-scale company spanning robotics, data centers, energy, and consumer devices. To achieve this goal, the company may go public in the future, helping secure the substantial investments required.
By the end of the dinner, it was clear that OpenAI is evolving beyond a mere AI model developer—it is positioning itself as a multidimensional competitor in future technology and consumer markets, with Sam Altman strengthening ties with the media as the company prepares for its next chapter.
