Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has reportedly been instructed by the U.S. government to immediately suspend access to two advanced AI models due to national security concerns. The company stated that it has already disabled access to the models worldwide in compliance with the directive.

According to Anthropic, the instruction was received at 5:21 p.m. on Friday. The order reportedly applied not only to specific foreign users but to all users globally. Other Anthropic AI models were not affected.

The company said one of the models was considered its most powerful system, capable of highly advanced code analysis and software vulnerability detection. Access had reportedly been limited to a small number of major technology companies for testing purposes.

A second model was described as a more controlled version with stricter safeguards in high-risk areas such as cybersecurity and biology. Following its release, it quickly gained recognition as one of the most powerful commercial AI systems available.

Although the official justification reportedly cited export-control concerns, Anthropic stated that the underlying issue involved a potential security flaw or “jailbreak” vulnerability that could force the model to analyze specific codebases.

The company argued that similar capabilities already exist in other commercial AI models and are frequently used by cybersecurity professionals for defensive purposes.

Anthropic disagreed with the government’s decision, saying that withdrawing a commercial AI model globally because of a limited security risk could hinder progress across the AI industry.

Technology analysts suggest that disputes between governments and AI companies over security and regulation are likely to become more common as increasingly powerful AI systems are released and regulators adopt stricter oversight.

Analysts also note that the decision could influence Anthropic’s business strategy and market reputation as the company is widely expected to pursue a future public stock offering.
