UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced plans to ban social media access for users under the age of 16 in order to ensure child and adolescent online safety.
He also announced stricter regulations for online gaming and livestreaming platforms to improve safety for minors.
Speaking at a press conference, Starmer said that stronger measures are needed to protect children’s mental health, personal safety, and development in the digital age.
Under the proposed policy, platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat would restrict access for users under 16. Gaming and livestreaming services allowing interaction with unknown adults will also face stricter controls.
The government said initial steps will be implemented under existing laws, with full regulations expected to be enforced by next spring.
Officials noted that many parents supported stricter age limits, though some researchers argue that education and awareness are also necessary alongside restrictions.
Australia has already implemented similar restrictions, and other countries are considering comparable policies.
