Staff Reporter | PNN:
Onion prices in the capital have risen sharply over the past two weeks. In markets like Shantinagar and Kawran Bazar, onions are selling for BDT 100–120 per kg, up from BDT 70–80 two weeks ago. Traders attribute the rise to lower supply compared to demand.

Rafiqul Islam, an onion trader in Kawran Bazar, said, “The domestic onion season ended long ago, and stored onions are also running low. At this time of year, supply is naturally lower. If the government allows onion imports, prices could decrease.”

Prices of other vegetables have also increased. Yesterday, bitter gourd was BDT 80/kg, pointed gourd 60/kg, ridge gourd and sponge gourd 60–80/kg, yardlong bean, ivy gourd, and pumpkin 50–60/kg, local cucumber 50–60/kg, radish 30–40/kg, potato 20–25/kg, eggplant 80–140/kg, and tomato 120–140/kg. Beans cost 80–100/kg, cauliflower 30–40/kg, and cabbage 40–50/kg.

Aminul, a senior vegetable vendor in Kawran Bazar, said, “Winter vegetable supply increased earlier, lowering prices. But due to political instability, trucks are not arriving in Dhaka, reducing supply. The situation is expected to normalize next week.”

Analysts say the main reason for rising prices is lower supply and end-of-season products. They note that timely government import policy could help control prices.
